Bill Goodwin is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter whose musical journey has been a testament to resilience and passion. His love affair with the guitar began at the young age of 12 when he took private lessons for classical guitar, laying the foundation for a lifelong devotion to music.
Bill mostly played in church during his youth, where he branched into rock, punk and metal genres. He studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston in the late 80’s, where he honed his skills as both a composer and performer. However, as life unfolded, music took a back seat for all the normal reasons as Bill got married, started a family and embarked on a working path from the sign business of his teens, to co-owning a sign company, to the voodoo of bending glass for neon signs, to working for Bose Corporation. Bill finally found his creative and technical talents come home producing live events, video, and graphics.
Bill's musical life took an unexpected turn when, over the years, his neck and shoulders succumbed to the grip of pain, hindering his ability to play the guitar for more than a few minutes at a time and even then, with great pain. A struggle with calcific tendonitis and the lingering effects of a SLAP tear operation on his left shoulder all but stopped Bill from playing the guitar for more than a decade. Physical therapy exercises provided some minor relief but fell very short of a cure. Bill embarked on an intense regimen of physical therapy one to 4 hours a day, pushing his limits with extreme versions of the PT exercises he had learned. He was determined to "chase the pain" and regain his range of motion.
During the pandemic, in the solitude of these self-imposed physical therapy sessions, often lasting several hours a day, something changed. Suddenly he found that he was no longer limited and rediscovered the joy of playing the guitar, staying up for hours at night with headphones plugged into his Spark amp. A renaissance unfolded, and the strings once again became an extension of his soul.
Then a pretty magical encounter in 2022 during an extended stay in Palm Beach became a turning point. Bill and his wife found themselves sharing wine, laughter, and music with Stevie Nicks' keyboardist, Ricky Peterson, and bassist, Al Ortiz. “I’m still not sure why they wanted to share their wine and hang out with us. I kept thinking ‘Hey man, we are not the cool kids. What are you doing?’” The impromptu sing-a-long on the beach reminded Bill, how much people enjoy singing together. They just need someone to sing and play to get them started. This inspired him to start learning covers at an alarming rate while even taking singing lessons to enhance his vocal performance and range. Fast forward a year later, in spring of 2025 and he has amassed a repertoire of 130+ covers and 10 original songs.
Bill's years on the backside of stages, orchestrating live events that often hosted celebrity talent, have instilled in him an innate understanding of supporting musicians for live shows. Now, with a renewed passion, he is transitioning from the event production world to embrace live performance. He’s already enjoying “being on the other side of the mic” and hopes to spend his final years performing, leading sing-along events and writing new music while adding more and more classics to his repertoire.
It’s not about celebrity. It’s not about being “in the limelight”. It is about human connection. It’s an experience where we get to feel something that transcends our own internal story and explore a shared set of emotions together. You can pack a lot of life in a three minute song. It’s one of the closest things to real magic we really have.
